Pro bono bot - seeking help for setting up
07/01/10 at 08:16:51

Who is knowledgeable and friendly enough to help me with settings of the bot for a pro bono project. The purpose of the bot is to help determine the best medical doctor for patients with specific illnesses. "Best" is defined by the h-index of each medical doctor. It is assumed that, if a doc has a good h-index, he/she is more experienced and knowledgeable than a doc without influential publications. Logical isn't it?  According to my view this would help patients, because less specialized medical docs and resulting mistreatments can be avoided. This can contribute that patients receive right treatment at the right treatment.

The process looks like the following:

1. query specific illness on scholar.google.de, e.g. "achilles tendon rupture"
2. restrict search to "pages in German"
3. harvest author names from search results, e.g. "MH Amlang"...
4. go to http://code.google.com/p/citations-gadget/
5. enter individual names harvested
6. harvest for each name: citation, cited, H-index of author names
7. the data output should be gathered in spreadsheets

Interesting application.  I am wondering if medical doctors spending more time on publications will spend less time on treatments.

Here is a sample robot you may start with.

Dear Admin,
thank you very much for your fast response and practical help setting up the bot. Will try it asap and give you feedback.
You are right with your doubt. Is a publishing doc a good doc? Not always. Some docs may prefer to publish many papers thin in quality. H-index is measuring however the quality of papers, i.e. how highly it is respected by peers. So the mass low quality publishers will receive a bad h-index and rank low.

However the doc publishing some quality papers will distinguish himself also in treatment. In order to publish meaningfully he must read all the other relevant papers, i.e. must learn from colleagues and not just rely on the pharma rep. He must also treat many patients in order to have an empirical base for a meaningful publication. This doc will also specialize, because in order to be outstanding in publishing and treatment he must focus resources. That's why the doc with a good h-index will probably be an outstanding specialist.

Opposite to him there is the universalist, who does everything once upon a theme and knows a bit about everything in order to sound knowledgeable. He has a nice smile and a white coat and the patient trusts him. But the knowledge of this doc is too thin in complicated cases, because he does the same thing just once a year and doesn't know the latest publications on this, because he does everything and just cannot read and learn everything.

My wife is a foot surgeon. A patient come to her for a 2nd opinion. The first treating doc wanted to amputate the patient's foot, because he was relying too much on the technical results of the MRT. My wife as a specialist however treating many cases like this knows that the MRT results may be misleading in some specific cases and knows to better read the indications. For the patient this means a saved foot, because she happened to meet a specialized doc.

To enable patients to find the best possible doc - this is what I want to achieve with your bot setting.

Thanks again for your good work - Hape
